Boonville, Missouri

About This Site

The community takes its name from Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of the famed frontiersman Daniel Boone. In the early 1800s, they established a salt operation near the area and transported their products from local salt licks to St. Louis. The region became known as "Boone's Lick," and the route connecting the salt works to St. Charles and St. Louis was called the Boone's Lick Trail. Franklin, Missouri, located near present-day Boonville, served as the eastern terminus of the trail and is widely recognized as the original starting point of the Santa Fe Trail.
